Golden Storm in Puerto Rico
Acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas, signed in the lower right corner. Hanging hardware is included.
While on a recent family vacation, my family and I were on a boat trip in the waters just off the coast of Humacao, Puerto Rico. it was a beautiful day with clear bright blue skies, when of a sudden the sky, mountains and water turned dark gray and black, however you could still see large strips of bright golden yellow and orange peeking through.
The inspiration for this painting came from that trip.
The upper half of the painting is dominated by a jagged, rocky landscape. The rocks are painted in various shades of gray, from deep charcoal to light stone, and are heavily contoured to emphasize their rugged texture. A glowing, golden-yellow light radiates from behind and between the rocks, suggesting a powerful sunset or a hidden light source. The sky above is filled with thick, dark, and turbulent clouds, painted in shades of gray and black, which are also illuminated by the same fiery light.
The lower half of the painting shows a dark, choppy body of water. The water's surface is a mix of deep grays and blacks, with streaks of white paint indicating waves or foam, giving a sense of movement and coldness. The overall mood is intense and somewhat foreboding due to the dark colors and tumultuous forms.
