Golden Storm in Puerto Rico

This landscape painting was inspired by a sudden, awe-inspiring weather event during a family boat trip off the coast of Humacao, Puerto Rico. We were enjoying a perfectly clear day when, in an instant, the sky, mountains, and water were swallowed by dark grays and blacks. What struck me most was how the sun refused to disappear completely, leaving large, brilliant strips of golden yellow and orange peeking through the heavy clouds.
To capture the intensity of that moment, I used an impressionistic approach for the churning water while applying a geometric and cubist-inspired structure to the mountains and sky. I wanted to deconstruct the storm into bold, heavy forms that convey the weight of the atmosphere. By focusing on the high contrast between the looming dark peaks and the radiant golden light, I’ve tried to recreate the "Golden Storm"—that fleeting, powerful transition where nature's beauty and its fury meet.
